BOTOX® Cosmetic is a wrinkle relaxer. Injected into carefully selected areas of the face, BOTOX blocks the signal between nerves and muscles, reducing the severity of wrinkles accompanying facial movement significantly. However, as a temporary solution, BOTOX will only provide these results for three to four months at a time.
BOTOX is commonly used to treat crow’s feet, the wrinkles extending vertically from the eyes’ outside corners. It can also be used to:
- Smooth deep forehead creases
- Erase frown lines from in between the eyebrows
- Lift sagging eyebrows
- Soften bunny lines on the bridge of the nose
- Eliminate wrinkles around and extending from the lip
- Erase chin dimples (pebbly chin)
Because these types of wrinkles, creases, and imperfections can begin early, even in your 20s, it is not uncommon for adults of all ages to seek BOTOX treatment. Really, the best age to start BOTOX treatment is whatever age you are when you decide to start BOTOX treatment.
Are Fillers the Same?
Dermal fillers are different from BOTOX. Instead of blocking nerve signals to smooth dynamic wrinkles, dermal fillers stimulate collagen production to gradually fill in areas of the skin that have become depressed, such as:
- Cheeks
- Temples
- Tear troughs
- Nasolabial folds
Fillers add volume to restore a fuller and more lifted look – they can even be used to address skin laxity on certain areas of the face – and they last longer than BOTOX, typically six to 18 months depending on formulation and treatment area.
Like BOTOX, some people start to use dermal fillers in their 20s and 30s. However, they become much more popular among people in their 40s and 50s. The best way to learn when a filler might be most beneficial for you is through a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Chatson.
