What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a neuromodulator. These products contain active ingredients that work to interrupt the signal between nerves and muscles, releasing tension and allowing muscles to relax. Once relaxed, overlying skin will smooth out, producing a wrinkle-free, less-aged appearance.

It is important to note that the signal is interrupted, not destroyed. Over time, as the active ingredient diminishes, tension will return and, along with it, the fine lines and wrinkles that were initially treated. However, additional treatments can help ensure continuous results.

What BOTOX® Cosmetics Treat

BOTOX® Cosmetic is effective at treating:

  • Forehead lines and creases
  • Frown Lines (in between the eyebrows)
  • Crow’s Feet (lines next to the eyes)
  • Bunny Lines (wrinkles at the top of the nose)
  • Lipstick Lines (lines around the mouth)
  • Neck Bands

BOTOX® Cosmetic can also be used to address chin pebbling and skin laxity along the jowls.

The best way to learn where BOTOX® Cosmetic may be useful for you is through a one-on-one consultation at the North Andover or Nashua office of Dr. George Chatson. During this consultation, Dr. Chatson can review all of your options and help you choose the service most suitable for your needs.

BOTOX® Cosmetic Safety

BOTOX® Cosmetic was approved for aesthetic purposes in 2002. Since that time, millions of women and men throughout the world have received BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. Very few have experienced serious or worrisome complications.

The most common reactions to BOTOX® Cosmetic are:

  • Redness and/or swelling at the injection site
  • Discomfort and/or bruising around injection sites
  • Ptosis (drooping) eyelid, eyebrows, or lips
  • Excessive tearing
  • Headache

Some people have also reported flu-like symptoms after receiving BOTOX® Cosmetic injections.

BOTOX® Cosmetic side-effects are typically short-lived and self-correcting. However, it is important to choose an injector who has the training, background, and experience necessary to help deliver safe and effective results. Choosing to work with a plastic surgeon for your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment places your results in the hands of a medical doctor with years of additional training in aesthetic services. Contact us today to schedule your consultation and learn more.

What is a Neurotoxin?

The active ingredient in BOTOX® Cosmetic is botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin that has been approved for medical use. Other neurotoxins include ethanol (drinking alcohol) and nitric oxide, which your body makes from things like beets. In excessive amounts, neurotoxins are dangerous. The amount in BOTOX® Cosmetic is very well tolerated and considered safe for most non-allergic individuals.
