BOTOX® Cosmetic Basics

BOTOX is the leading nonsurgical cosmetic procedure for reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles and lines, and this popular and effective treatment is often listed alongside other options that are commonly referred to as dermal fillers. Yet BOTOX Cosmetic works differently than soft-tissue fillers, and it is used to treat a variety of common conditions.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. George P. Chatson can help you determine if BOTOX is the right choice for your unique cosmetic needs. To schedule your personal consultation, please call our Andover, Massachusetts, office at 978-687-1151 or our Nashua, New Hampshire, office at 603-882-2103 .

Some dermal fillers treat the symptom of facial aging, but do not address the source. With age, the accumulated effects of muscle contractions throughout the face begin to show in the form of wrinkles and lines.

Unlike dermal fillers, which are injected into the affected area to help restore skin tone and smooth surface skin, BOTOX temporarily inhibits the nerves that trigger the muscle actions that contribute to those lines and wrinkles that can make you look older than you feel. As that muscle activity relaxes, the lines and furrows fade, leaving a smoother, more youthful appearance.

BOTOX Cosmetic can effectively reduce the appearance of common signs of facial aging that include but are not limited to:

  • Frown lines between the eyebrows, also known as glabellar lines
  • Wrinkles and lines on the forehead
  • Wrinkles and lines around the eyes, also known as crow’s feet

Although BOTOX is not the best option for every patient with facial lines and wrinkles, it is a safe and effective treatment for most adult women and men. BOTOX Cosmetic is best administered by a board-certified plastic surgeon who has a nuanced understanding of facial features and the aesthetic properties of BOTOX.

For the right patients, BOTOX can provide the desired results nearly immediately. However, repeat treatments are necessary to maintain results. Without periodic follow-ups, your muscles will regain activity, and lines and wrinkles will re-emerge.

To learn if you can benefit from BOTOX treatment, please contact George P. Chatson, M.D., Cosmetic Surgery of the Face & Body to arrange your consultation. Dr. Chatson welcomes patients from the greater Andover and Lowell, Massachusetts, and Nashua and Salem, New Hampshire, areas; he was recently named one of New Hampshire Magazine’s Top Doctors for the third consecutive year.
