What is Septorhinoplasty?

short hair asian woman model touch her nose and clean fresh skinRhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure. Commonly known as a “nose job,” rhinoplasty improves the nose’s size, shape, and symmetry to bring it into ideal alignment.

With rhinoplasty, Dr. George Chatson can address:

  • Bumps or divots on the bridge of the nose
  • Upturned or downturned nasal tip
  • Nose width
  • Crooked nose presentation
  • Nostril shape and size

Rhinoplasty can help improve breathing in some cases. However, when a septal deviation is the root cause of breathing difficulties, rhinoplasty alone may not be enough to address the issue.

Septoplasty is not a cosmetic procedure. During a septoplasty, the septum is repositioned into the center of the nose. To accomplish this, the septum may be broken and reset, or portions may need to be removed to allow it to be rebuilt.

Septoplasty is a functional surgery designed to improve breathing and treat issues such as chronic sinusitis. When these issues are present in addition to cosmetic concerns, a combination of procedures, known as septorhinoplasty, may be appropriate. The best way to learn if this is the right option for your specific needs is through a one-on-one consultation and evaluation with a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Chatson.

If your septal deviation is minimal, rhinoplasty may be enough to correct the issue. However, breathing difficulties caused by septal deviation are typically more pronounced, requiring a different procedure to correct. During your initial consultation, Dr. Chatson will carefully evaluate the structure of your nose, including your septum, to help you determine if cosmetic nose surgery, a functional procedure, or some combination thereof will be needed to produce the desired results.
