Smart liposuction, which is actually a liposuction system called Smartlipo™, is used to prepare fat cells prior to their removal with suction. There are a number of techniques used today to prepare the fat for an easier, less traumatic removal. Some of these techniques use lasers and others use high-frequency ultrasound energy.
Smartlipo uses laser energy to rupture and liquefy fat cells. Once melted, fat is suctioned away with a traditional liposuction instrument called a cannula. Without laser assistance, liposuction relies on the cannula breaking apart fat cells aggressively, without softening the fat or preparing it in other ways.
There are several benefits to preparing fat with smart liposuction:
- Smartlipo is overall less invasive and is less traumatic for surrounding tissues.
- Post-operative bruising is often reduced.
- Your Smartlipo recovery may be faster.
- Some moderate degree of skin tightening may be caused by the laser.
Smart liposuction can be used on a wide range of body areas, including delicate places like the chin and neck. The only way to know if this type of smart liposuction is right for you is to consult an experienced plastic surgeon to discuss the risks and benefits, and whether it can achieve your goals.
