Long-Term Healthy BMI Linked to Tummy Tuck Surgery

A new study presented at the annual scientific meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has found that patients who undergo post-bariatric surgery body contouring are better able to maintain a healthy BMI. The study looked at 15 years of data on a number of patients who had undergone lap-band surgery and found that those who had procedures such as tummy tuck surgery maintained an average BMI of 24.6 percent. Those who declined post-bariatric surgery body contouring treatment averaged a BMI of 31 percent – a percentage that is still considered obese by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. By contrast 24.6 percent is within the healthy range established by the CDC.
