Breast Augmentation, Other Plastic Surgery Procedures Rise in 2013

Plastic surgery procedures and minimally invasive cosmetic treatments increased from 2012 to 2013 thanks to continued economic recovery as well as new products and advances in technology, according to a recent report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Board-certified plastic surgeon and ASPS member Dr. George P. Chatson is dedicated to offering patients from the greater Andover, Massachusetts, and Nashua, New Hampshire, areas exceptional cosmetic surgery and nonsurgical treatments. Just over 15 million cosmetic procedures—including surgical and nonsurgical treatments—were performed last year, according to the ASPS 2013 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report. The figure marks a 3 percent increase from 2012.

The ASPS attributes the jump in part to technological advancements and new cosmetic products. In 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved several new plastic surgery devices and cosmetic goods, including two form-stable silicone-gel breast implants (sometimes referred to as “gummy bear” implants) and a hyaluronic acid facial filler.

All three United States-based breast implant makers now offer FDA-approved form-stable silicone breast implants. In fact, the number of breast augmentation procedures and the number of women who opted for silicone breast implants both rose in 2013.

Silicone breast implants were used in about 72 percent of all breast enhancement procedures performed last year. The approval of teardrop-shaped silicone-gel breast implants offers women additional options for achieving breast augmentation results that look and feel natural.

According to the ASPS report, the five most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in 2013 were:

The five most popular minimally invasive cosmetic treatments of 2013 were:

  • Botulinum toxin type A injectables, including BOTOX Cosmetic®
  • Soft tissue fillers
  • Laser hair removal
  • Microdermabrasion
