During tummy tuck surgery, abdominal muscles are pulled together and reattached. This serves serval purposes, including a reduction in low back pain. Separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) impact core strength and place a larger burden on the back. Studies have found that, by reattaching and firming these muscles during abdominoplasty, low back pain can be eliminated.
In addition to reducing or eliminating low back pain, treating diastasis recti can both correct and decrease your risk for developing a ventral hernia, reduce urinary incontinence, and it may help improve balance, posture, and general strength. The procedure also improves clothing options, increases range of motion, and produces a more toned and attractive figure.
Am I a Good Tummy Tuck Candidate?
The best candidates for tummy tuck surgery are women and men who are close to their goal BMI. Abdominoplasty is not a weight loss procedure. While it can help remove some weight and has been shown to help patients sustain a healthy weight, it cannot be used to eliminate large deposits of fat. If you are significantly overweight, other methods of weight loss will be needed to improve your candidacy.
In addition to being close to your goal BMI, the best tummy tuck candidates are:
- Nonsmokers
- In good health
- Able to take time off to recover
- Willing to follow pre and postoperative directions
- Realistic in their expectations
Tummy tuck surgery can improve contours, enhance strength, and even offer certain medical benefits, but it is not a panacea. Before you commit to the procedure, it is very important that you understand its benefits and limitations, enabling you to choose the best option for your needs.
