One June 14, the FDA announced its approval of a new silicone gel-based breast implant produced by Mentor. Known as MemoryShape, this model is one of the increasingly popular types of breast implants sometimes referred to as “gummy bear implants.”
The FDA approved these breast implants for use in breast augmentation in women ages 22 and older, and for use in breast reconstruction procedures for women of any age.
Some women prefer silicone gel-based breast implants over saline breast implants and standard silicone breast implants because they tend to more closely resemble the form and feel of natural breasts. These so-called “gummy bear implants” are filled with thick, cohesive, silicone gel intended to help the breast implants retain shape, volume and profile; these implants also feature a less-rounded, tear-drop-style design that more closely mimics the contours of natural breasts.
It’s important to note, however, that no single style of breast implant is the best option for every woman. Different types of breast implants come with their own advantages and disadvantages depending on your body type and cosmetic goals.
