If you are concerned with excess fat and skin isolated to your neck area, you may be an ideal candidate for a neck lift. When performing a neck lift, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. George P. Chatson restores a defined contour and a toned and appealing appearance to your neck.
The Neck Lift Procedure
A neck lift may be performed as an isolated procedure, or it may be included as part of a facelift. A neck lift is designed to reduce fullness in the neck due to fat deposits and improve a moderate degree of skin laxity. If a greater degree of skin laxity is present, the re-draping of the loose neck skin requires that the facial skin also be contoured with a facelift in order to achieve a balanced, natural appearance. In consultation with Dr. Chatson, you will discuss the right combination of procedures tailored to your unique needs to achieve the results you desire.
A neck lift can often be accomplished with liposuction alone when localized fat in the neck is the main concern and you still have good skin tone in the neck. For some patients, a surgical procedure is ideal. With a surgical neck lift, Dr. Chatson makes a small incision under the chin through which excess fat and skin can be removed. The neck muscles and remaining skin are tightened to create smoother, more natural contours for your neck.
Issues Addressed by a Neck Lift
A neck lift can address issues such as:
- Loosened or weak neck muscles
- Vertical neck bands
- Loose neck skin
- Excess fat deposits under the chin
Diet and exercise often are insufficient to tone the neck. In one of the most difficult places to lose excess fat, a neck lift is frequently the best method for achieving a more toned appearance. During your initial consultation with Dr. Chatson, the appearance and quality of your neck will be evaluated and your candidacy for this procedure will be determined.
Neck Lift Results and Recovery
Depending on the technique used for your neck lift, recovery may take up to 7-10 days. During that time, a neck support garment is worn to provide support to the healing tissues of the neck. Some mild pain, swelling, and bruising are expected following a neck lift. Swelling and bruising should subside within one to two weeks. You should be able to resume most of your normal activities within one week.
Following your neck lift, you will be able to enjoy a smooth and contoured neck for years to come. The benefits of this procedure and what you may expect during recovery will be discussed in detail during your initial consultation.
Can a Neck Lift Be Combined With Other Procedures?
Neck lift surgery addresses loose and crepey skin on the throat and jowls. It can also be used to eliminate submental fullness (double chin) and contour the entire jawline. When appropriate, neck lift surgery can be combined with a facelift, eyelid surgery, forehead lift, and other facial procedures to produce an overall smoother, more youthful, and more attractive appearance.
If combining procedures could help you reach your goals, Dr. Chatson will discuss your options during your initial consultation.
What Is the Typical Recovery Time?
Most people can resume working within seven to ten days following neck lift surgery. Demanding jobs and more advanced exercise will need to be avoided for six to eight weeks, depending on your body’s healing response.
Results should be visible within a few weeks, but may take up to six months to be fully realized. During this time, you will return to our office for occasional follow-up visits where we can assess your progress and help you determine when it is safe to add physically demanding activities back into your life.
Are There Any Risks Involved?
Neck lift surgery is considered safe for most patients. However, surgical risks, such as bleeding, infection, and poor incision healing, are possible following any procedure. With neck lift surgery, specific risks include visible incision scars, uneven or unpleasing results, and over-correction, all of which Dr. Chatson works to minimize.
Dr. Chatson performs neck lift surgery in accredited surgical facilities with trained and experienced staff on hand to help ensure your safety and comfort. Great care is taken during the procedure to reduce risks of unsatisfactory results, but your actions will play a role as well. You must follow all of our pre and postoperative directions to help reduce your risk of avoidable complications and poor results.
How Long Do the Results of a Neck Lift Last?
So long as you stay healthy and take good care of your skin, a neck lift can produce results for 10 to 15 years. This varies from patient to patient and is impacted by genetics, lifestyle choices, and daily habits.
We can help you gauge how long your results may last based on factors unique to you during your one-on-one consultation.
