Will a Tummy Tuck Remove Stretch Marks?

Woman's belly with stretch marks

Tummy tuck surgery removes loose and sagging skin from the belly and waist. In doing so, stretch marks are often removed as well. However, the procedure is not intended to target stretch marks. Instead, their removal is a secondary benefit.

Tummy tuck surgery helps to produce ideal contours by excising droopy skin. It slims the waist and tones the belly, helping to reveal underlying musculature and natural contours. In most cases, liposuction is included in the procedure. This further helps to define the midsection and create the most desirable outcomes.

Dr. Chatson utilizes SAFELipo, the only liposuction technique with fat equalization. This method helps ensure that results look and feel natural while minimizing risks, improving the recovery experience, and significantly reducing downtime.

Complete tummy tuck includes the reattaching of abdominal muscles as well. Abdominal wall separation is common following multiple pregnancies or substantial weight gain. During a full abdominoplasty, these muscles are stitched back together. Cosmetically, this draws the waist in and helps to produce a firmer belly. Physically, it may help reduce risks for some types of hernia, improve balance and core strength, and address chronic low back pain. During your initial consultation, Dr. Chatson will carefully evaluate your frame, listen to your concerns, and help you understand what a tummy tuck may be able to do for you.

What About Scars?

Removing stretch marks but replacing them with scars seems counterproductive. And yet, tummy tuck surgery will leave scars. However, Dr. Chatson takes every care to reduce the risk of visible scarring through procedural steps and the strictest adherence to safety standards. You can help reduce the risk of visible scarring by:

  • Avoiding nicotine, alcohol, and blood thinners before and after surgery
  • Using your compression garment
  • Keeping incisions dry and clean
  • Avoiding activities that could strain incisions

While scars are unavoidable after surgery, they will often fade to all but invisible with time. We will ensure you have the information and resources you need to help reduce your risk of developing unsightly or apparent scars.
