Exercising after Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation provides a way to increase the size and enhance the overall appearance of your breasts, and the results of the procedure should not interfere with your active lifestyle after your initial recovery from surgery. Breast implant placement in front of the muscle may be best for women who work their chest muscles vigorously, but you must discuss this with the plastic surgeon.

It’s important to take some time off from moderate to intense exercise for several weeks following breast augmentation. At Dr. George Chatson’s practice, we make sure you understand your recovery timeline and what your physical activity should be like during that time. Although the details of your recovery may vary, generally you can expect:

  • Right after breast augmentation: Limit your physical activity to walking around to improve circulation.
  • The first three to six weeks after breast augmentation: you should not do anything more intense than light aerobic activity. If you lift weights during this time, do not work the chest muscles at all.
  • Six to eight weeks after breast augmentation: In most cases, full activities can be resumed at this point, but you should check with Dr. Chatson to make sure.

Wearing a properly sized sports bra after breast augmentation will make exercise more comfortable and will provide beneficial support of your breast tissue and ligaments.
