Various procedures are available for improving neck contour. Certain patients with localized fat collections and reasonably good skin tone may be candidates for neck liposuction alone. Other patients with some degree of skin laxity and neck muscle laxity require a procedure called submental lipectomy with platysmaplasty (neck lift). In this procedure, a small incision is made in the neck crease beneath the chin and excess fatty tissue is removed. The neck muscle (platysma) may also be tightened through this incision. Patients who have an even greater degree of skin laxity may require a lower facelift in order to properly restore a youthful neck contour. A mini-facelift approach or a traditional facelift approach may be selected according to the anatomic needs of each individual patient. A facial support garment is typically worn postoperatively after neck contouring procedures in order to support the healing neck tissues and decrease swelling.
