Although rarely discussed, enlarged male breasts are a common condition. There is no known cause for gynecomastia, although there has been some correlation with various drugs or medical conditions. In some men, the condition develops at puberty and then spontaneously regresses. However, many men find that the overly developed breast tissue does not go away over time and a feminine chest appearance results.
Men who feel self-conscious about their appearance are helped with surgery to correct gynecomastia and achieve a contoured chest that is flatter, firmer, and masculine in appearance. The deformity is the result of overgrowth of glandular and fatty tissues. An incision at the areolar margin is commonly used in order to remove the rubbery glandular tissue. Liposuction is often used to remove excess fat from the chest area. In certain patients, excessive skin must be contoured in order to achieve the optimal results.
