Capsular contracture refers to a firm capsule of scar that may
develop around breast implants. This situation is more likely
to arise in patients who have had silicone gel implants rather
than those patients with saline-filled implants. Patients with
capsular contracture may choose to undergo a procedure wherein
the firm capsule of scar is removed and the existing implants
are removed. Such patients may opt to have new implants placed
at the time of implant removal. In this setting, silicone gel
implants are often replaced with saline-filled implants. Additional
procedures to reshape the breasts, such as breast lift (mastopexy),
may also be performed at the same time in order to enhance breast
shape.
