Breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a procedure to reshape
the breasts in order to restore a more youthful breast appearance.
Breast drooping, or ptosis, is a condition that is hereditary
in some women, but more commonly results from changes that occur
after pregnancies, weight loss, or aging. In women with ptosis,
the breast skin envelope is typically stretched larger than it
needs to be and the nipple is positioned on the lower half of
the breast contour. Patients who have substantial breast tissue
volume and ptosis may benefit from mastopexy alone. Other patients
with ptosis and smaller breast volumes often benefit from the
addition of breast implants to the mastopexy procedure in order
to achieve upper pole breast fullness. Breast implants may either
be positioned under the chest wall muscle (subpectoral) or over
the chest wall muscle (subglandular). There are several variations
of the mastopexy procedure. The circumareolar mastopexy is the
most common breast lift performed by Dr. Chatson and it results
in a scar that is limited to the outer margins of the areola.
Other techniques require a circumareolar incision as well as
a vertical incision beneath the areola. Patients with an even
larger degree of breast ptosis and tissue laxity require the
traditional mastopexy procedure which involves incisions around
the areola, below the areola, and across the inframammary fold
beneath the breasts.
